NEW YORK!!!

I kept trying to think of some super catchy title for this post but nothing looked good, so NEW YORK it is! Incidentally, I feel it really captures the essence of how I still feel about our trip. Shouty capitals because it was AWESOME. So there you go!

Its taken me awhile to put these up... I don't really know why. Probably because there were so many pictures to go through and edit and choose that it seemed daunting but I think I finally got it all figured out. I took so many pictures, and only decided to put less than half on the blog. The really good stuff, I guess you could say, (or at least the highlights.) I am so glad my parents let me come on this trip with them. It was just what I needed- some family time. I wish I would have had the internet at our hotel- I would have tried to blog one day at a time when I was there. So you'll probably get the reader's digest version.

Trip Highlights:
  • World Trade Center Memorial
  • Empire State Building
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Central Park
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • The Museum of Natural History
  • Newsies on Broadway
  • Anything Goes on Broadway
  • Philadelphia/Lancaster Pennsylvania
  • Times Square
  • Cupcakes. Lots and lots of cupcakes.
Basically all the touristy kind of things you have to do at least once. Next time I go, hopefully I can see a lot more of the not so obvious things. And just go to shows on Broadway. All day.

I'm just going to start putting up pictures. Lots of pictures.... (I suggest clicking the pictures and looking at the slide show, too. That way they are easier to see.)

Day 1:

The 9-11 memorial- one of the giant fountains.

one of the seven buildings being built at the memorial site.

The tree in the fence is called the "survivor tree" because it survived the attacks of 9-11.

NBC store

30 Rock

Ready for our first Broadway show of the trip- Anything Goes. It was spectacular!

After the show we decided to go a certain direction and accidentally found ourselves in Times Square!

M&M store

Can you say heaven?!?

Beginning of day 2.... Our crazy journey to find a hidden dumpling restaurant in China Town. We got lost several times, including a ride with a misled taxi driver, but we finally found it!! And let me tell you, it was worth the wait! I don't think I'll ever find a better Chinese place than Vanessa's Dumplings. It was so cheap too! 8 dumplings for a dollar. In NYC. Crazy, right?

China Town

mmmm....

We trekked our way up to Empire State Building... ok, ok. We took a taxi to it... It was so cloudy that day you couldn't see the top of the spire.

Buddy the Elf, what's your favorite color?

Me and Chels on the top!

Mom and Pa

The view to the south

I took this picture for Ethan. The NY Rangers were in the Stanley Cup playoffs when we were there. They were playing at Madison Square Garden when we passed by that night.
Times Square at night

Empire State- We never did figure out why it was green that night.

Day 3:
Waiting for the train in Hoboken, NJ
Once upon a time, it was a very, very rainy day in NYC. We decided, like the crazy people we are, to go out to see the Statue of Liberty. There would be less crowds, so of course it was a good idea. Well... we came  away completely soaked, but we accomplished our goal! It was very cool to see the statue up close.
Yep. We were those nerdy tourists who wore ponchos. Cold and wet, but happy to be there!

Ellis Island

Then, we went to Little Italy for some delicious Italian food. BEST PASTA OF MY LIFE. The illusion was ruined when our waiter told us he was from Mexico... but it didn't make the food any less wonderful.

Love it! (I know its all a show for the tourists, but I just don't care...)

Central Park! I LOVE the park.

I hadn't seen this part of the park before. It was an awesome little theatre for Shakespearean Plays. Sounds like my kind of place..

Museum of Natural History

This picture shows many things- Macy's, of course, and the Empire State Building, the top of which was completely covered in clouds. May I draw your attention to the psychedelic sign in the corner? I didn't have to? I KNOW. It blinded us every night as we walked past on the way to the train. My eyes died a little more every time...

These are a tad out of order... This was the day we took a bus tour of the south part of Manhattan. Here's the back of Madison Square Garden

One of my favorites- the Flat Iron Building.

Trinity Church

Battery Park

South Street Market on the Harbor

Washington Bridge. You can see the Brooklyn Bridge in the background. Unfortunately we never had time to go over there.

Cloudy evening in Times Square. Notice the Hershey's store in the corner... mmmm

We never got to go inside, but here it is! Carlo's Bake Shop from Cake Boss. The line always wrapped around the street... so we just took a picture.
New York Pizza. Mom didn't realize you were supposed to fold it... What a tourist... :) My favorite pizza I'd ever had was at this store. It was mozzarella and ricotta, with NO SAUCE! Its like they knew I was coming...

We took a tour of North Manhattan today. This is Pete, the world's best tour guide. He was HILARIOUS. He joked around with everyone on the bus. When he found out we're Mormons, he promised us he'd show us our temple. "Hey, ya know that guy Angel Moroni? The guy on top of the temple? We'll go say hi to him." Basically- awesome. He knew we were going to the Newsies that day, so he made sure we got there on time, even if it meant not stopping to pick up some other tourists on the way... :)

Ready to start the tour

We had those smiles on our faces the whole tour- he was just that funny. Also- notice WICKED(!) at the Gershwin Theatre.  I totally wish we could have seen that too.

Another view of Central Park

Columbus Square. Doesn't that make you want to watch Enchanted?
Just like Pete promised! The LDS temple, right smack in the middle of the city. If you look closely, you can see Angel Moroni. Pete forgot to tell us until we were a bit past it. And unfortunately, my camera had died, so this crappy phone shot was all I could get. Either way, seeing such a wonderful place in the middle of a crazy city made me very happy.
One of the very pretty cathedrals in the city.
Newsies at the Nederlander Theatre. It was AMAZING. It had 4 of my favorite dancers from So You Think You Can Dance. Chelsie was drooling. I had to bring her back to reality a few times. Its hard to blame her though... an entire play full of attractive men who are also excellent dancers and singers? Any girl in her right mind would have a hard time keeping their jaw from dropping every now and then.

Day 4: We spent our time in Pennsylvania today. We went to Philadelphia to see Independence Hall and eat a cheesesteak, then to Valley Forge (which was beautiful, but all the pictures are on my dad's camera) and Lancaster county, in the Amish Country. Amish Country was one of the most stunningly beautiful places I've ever seen. (pictures are also on my dad's camera.)
Independence hall, where both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed.

Sonny's cheesesteaks. SO. GOOD.

Nice look for us, I think.

Day 5: Our Museum day

View of the park from inside of the Museum of Natural History

Foyer of the Museum of Natural History

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

AW! So great. This is one of my favorite places in the world. I love the Met. This was the Greek/Roman section.

Gate of an ancient church. Also where I got in trouble for leaving my flash on.

An ancient Egyptian Temple. No big deal.

Not only are the artifacts amazing, but the building itself is beautiful!

Washington Crossing the Delaware. I had no idea this picture was so huge. It is very cool. My dad was very excited to see this.

Beautiful artwork. And so tired from walking all day.

Museum foyer.

Ding Dang Dong... the Plaza Hotel

FAO Schwartz. Yes, there was an entire Harry Potter section. Yes, I am wearing Professor McGonnagall's hat. Yes, I was in heaven. Thank you for asking.

They wouldn't let us play it. It was sad.

Somehow we got dragged into a bike/carriage ride. It was actually pretty sweet.

This was Johnny, our fearless leader. And the world's biggest flirt.

Waiting at a stop light.

These little beauties became our nightly tradition. We stumbled upon a place called Baked by Melissa, where there were bite size cupcakes. It was like a little cupcake shot. And they were so tasty. We each had 3 on the way to our train every night. MMM. I miss them already...

Well, folks. That about sums it up. Maybe I'll get some more pictures from my mom, dad or Chelsie and add them. Thanks to the parentals for taking me on such an amazing trip!

Needless to say....

Practicum Round 2 (catch up)

Well folks, the semester has come and gone! Can you believe that it is already over? I am beyond excited. It feels so good to not have to worry about school or tests or lesson plans or homework or finding a place to park in the ridiculous madness that is called BYU student parking... Now we are focused on packing up the apartment and finding someone to buy our contract. (If you know anyone...send them our way!) Our house is a mess and the reality of moving is starting to set in. In other words, the craziness of school is now replaced with the craziness of moving, which I'll gladly accept for now. I found out that I'll officially be student teaching in the Jordan School District this fall, and graduating in December. YAY! I'm so excited for new experiences and new advisers and mentors. It will be great to have a different perspective. I don't know what school/grade/teacher yet- I'll post those when I know them.

I figured I'd better write down my experiences from practicum this semester before I forget. This round was a WONDERFUL experience! I seriously lucked out with my class, teacher, and partner.

My partner this time around was my friend Rachel from class. She is great! I'm pretty sure she got us through the whole thing, she was always making sure I was doing all my assignments! (Which I appreciated, because for some reason I felt very unorganized this time around.)  It was great to have her to talk to, especially when trying to make the decision between student teaching and internship, because we would constantly add to our pros/cons list for each one every day. I was glad to have someone in the same boat as me, who helped me stay practical and rational. And sane. (or a close approximation of the word.) She is going to be a great teacher someday!

My teacher was Mrs. Richey. She was so great! I could see so many good qualities in her that I want in myself when I become a teacher. She had the perfect balance of fun and management. Her students knew she loved them and expected them to do their best. She was so kind and patient with the kids, even though she had her own struggles and the kids just about drove her crazy. :) (in a good way, of course...) She joked with her class, and had fun, but was always on top of things, and the students learn so much from her. You could tell she loves what she does and she is so good at it. Again, she is one of those teachers who make it look so natural and easy--teaching is her second nature. She put so much effort into her classroom and into helping each kid succeed.

My class was a wonderful group of 3rd graders. They were about the friendliest kids I'd ever met. It was a very chatty class, and they loved working in groups or as a class. Most of them didn't handle solo work very well, which made for some fun, interactive group lessons. They were so funny--I loved joking with them. Rachel and I ate lunch with them sometimes and played games with them at recess. They were foursquare champions. As I am typing this I am a little overwhelmed by how much I miss them all!

Things I learned from practicum round 2:
1. Never underestimate the power of reading to children!  Our teacher would read a book to them before lunch every day. I remember my teachers doing this in school and loving it. As my literacy teacher, Brother Wilcox would say, "People are never too old to be read to." These chatty, noisy, fidgety kids would settle down when Mrs. Richey would read to them. For most of the time, we were reading Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. They would sit and listen, and the room was so calm and quiet. The kids didn't look like they were paying attention, but each kid knew exactly what was happening in the story and they were so excited to hear what came next in the book. Some kids who were especially not motivated in all other aspects of school actually brought the book so they could follow along. It was amazing to see how the kids loved reading because of the great example of their teacher.

2. Every kid is worth the extra effort. Mrs. Richey would stay after school with a group of kids who were struggling with reading. She did this out of her own time, and didn't receive any compensation for it. However, you could see how much those kids appreciated her taking the time to help them. Kids know when they are not at the top of the class. Its not a secret, and often their confidence is a big thing holding them back. But if you take the time to help each student, even if that means extra time, they will meet your expectations. When kids are given love and support, and given the chance, they will grow. I had special opportunities to help students who struggled and needed some extra attention. The smiles on their faces when they figured something out, or read a difficult word, or made a connection with what they were learning is a priceless, heart-warming thing to see. The student and I would both get so excited when one of them would make progress, and it was beyond rewarding.

3. Foursquare these days is NOT the same as it used to be when I played... but I still rock at it.

4.Children learn by example. We had a student in our class with Asperger's Syndrome. He was a beautiful, kind little boy who surprised me every day. I LOVED helping him and talking to him. He needed extra help in class, and had a hard time talking to students and being around other kids on the playground. Because our teacher was so kind to him, but still expected him to do his best, the other students treated him the same way. It was a wonderful thing to see how those students loved this kid, and were so nice to him. They were very protective of him and always made sure he was welcome, but let him have his space when he wanted it. Some days, he would join in the foursquare, and joked and laughed with the students. Other days, he kept to himself. Either way, each and every student was so kind and supportive of him. They were supportive of each other as well. They got along, and there were hardly any disagreements. If there were, they were resolved quickly. But because they had a such a great teacher showing them how to treat others, they learned to be respectful and helpful. This is something I will definitely work hard to repeat in my classroom.

5. All you need is love. Sometimes, what kids need more than anything is just to feel loved and accepted. Sometimes, there are more important things than getting every homework assignment in or getting 100% on all your grades, or passing tests. Sometimes kids just need to hear that they are important, and that they have something to offer and someone who believes in them.

Here are my crazy kids!

The crazy foursquare games! It was a very serious business, let me tell you.

Seth and Keynan were our singers. They LOVED Adele, had her songs memorized, and perform them on a daily basis.

Here's the carpool in our classroom- Kalli, Katie, Rachel (my partner) and me. And yes, it is crazy hair day, and we were slightly more into than the kids. So? :)

My amazing class! From L-R, top-bottom: Mrs. Richey, Claire, Briana, Maddie, Izzy, Me.
Charlie, Seth, Kesli, Keynan, Maya, Kobe, Emily, Taylor, Olivia, Zeke, Keldon, Haygen, Riley, Easton, and Sam.
Jordan, Ellie, Naleea, Hannah.
LOVE THEM!

Texas bound...

Well, people... it's official! Ethan and I are heading to Odessa, Texas for the summer. We are excited for a change, at least for a little while. We will be staying with Ethan's parents. Ethan is going to work for his dad installing turf. I'll teach swimming lessons and do any other kind of job I can find to help out! So, if any of you are reading this, and know the Ormsbys in Odessa, and want private swimming lessons, let me know! :)

I'm looking forward to trying something new, even though it will be very difficult to leave my family for the summer. Summer is such a beautiful, green time in Utah and I'll miss my mountains, but we'll have lots of fun with the family in Texas. We are leaving April 30th, and we'll get there either that day or the next. We'll come back in the fall for school.

Let the countdown begin! Our next adventure begins in a few weeks. See you there! :)

Here is a map of Odessa, for those of you who have no idea where it is... :)

because homework is overrated....

I should be doing homework, but...

As my husband can attest... I've had a lot on my mind lately.

So, because I know you all love to read what I'm thinking, I thought I'd get some of it out in this blog. I realized it had been awhile since I posted last, and although not much has actually happened, it feels like sooooo much has happened.  Here are some things I've been thinking about.

1- I have been loving my second round of practicum. I'm in a third grade class at Old Mill Elementary in Heber. Can I just say, I LOVE THEM. Oh man oh man. They are so great- I don't think there is a better class out there- literally. They are usually so well behaved, and they love working together. They all get along so well. We have had so much fun. I can't believe how much I've learned about teaching, and I can already tell I am improving. I still have a long way to go, but some more things are starting to come naturally, and I can focus on other things that I need to learn. Today, we ate lunch with our class and played four-square with them at recess... I was a little rusty, but I figured it out eventually.... :) We all realized that we only have one week left, and everyone was telling us how sad they were and it hit me--I'm so attached to these kids! I love them so much and I've only been with them for a few weeks. They are so funny, smart and sweet. I wish I could stay with them the rest of the year.

2- I also realized that the semester is coming to an end... and so quickly! I can't believe how close I am to graduating!!! I'll be graduating this December. what?!

3-I finally decided on student teaching. I had to choose between student teaching and an internship. Both are good options, and it may seem like a pretty easy decision but... we all know how indecisive I am about everything. Every day I thought I wanted to something different. Finally, I decided to student teach. This means I will be done in December. I'll be spending time in a classroom for the semester, but I don't know much other than that, and I'm excited to find out.

4- Ethan and I have been throwing around the idea of going to Texas for the summer. Ethan has the opportunity to work for his dad installing turf down there. Its going to be hard for me, I've never been away from home that long, or anywhere else. I love to travel, but this is different, and a little scary. I am excited for a new adventure, though. I'm glad we'll be with family, and it will be good to be with family we don't usually see. We'll see where this summer takes us!

Now that you've read all the boring details of my life... here's a recipe I LOVE.
MINT BROWNIES!
They are like... 85% fat, and 15% sugar, so be warned. These taste so great! I also found a cookie version of this using cake mix cookies (the cookies are 1 devils food cake mix, 2 eggs and 1/2 c. oil. Thats it. Seriously. The rest is the same- just make cookies!) Here's the link to that website. (Also- if you make this version, use about half the amount of butter in the ganache. If you use all the butter, that's all you will taste. The amount of butter should be about the same as the chocolate.)

However, this is the one I love the most! They are so good! There is something so much more delicious about the brownies. Enjoy!
